Ancient Birdies

Book Review: The Dovekeepers
By Alice Hoffman

I finished this book a few weeks back.

Told in the voices of 4 women, it's set in 70 C.E and based on a story of nine hundred Jews who were forced to flee their homes and hide on a mountain in the Judean desert from sieging Roman armies.

Each woman has her own story as to how she ended up there and what her life was before the Romans took everything from them. I was enraptured with all of their stories but the first one, Yael, was the one that I felt most connected with, in a way that I can’t quite explain.

They all end up working together in the dovecotes, caring for the birds who essentially provided them their survival, in the form of fertilizer for their crops. It was interesting how their individual stories entwined and how they ended up being a family, after their own families had been ripped from them.

It was a beautifully written novel, with breathtaking descriptions of the devastating fall of Jerusalem.  For a piece of history that I knew nothing about prior to reading this novel, I found that it gave such a personal look into this era of ancient Israel.

Two thumbs up!

Cheers!
