Games and Kings

Book Review:  Game of Thrones
By: George R.R. Martin

Yup. Book review time. And I will be the first to admit, this is waaaay out of my usual genre.

I decided to pick this series up because:

a) enough people had recommended it to me that I decided to give it a go

b) mom and dad have been raving about the HBO series that I’m dying to watch but won’t until I have read the books (I always try and read the book first and then watch any movies that have been adapted from it) and

c) the box set was on for a killer price at Costco one day, and I’m cheap ;)

So what do I think? Well I am halfway through book two and I’m addicted! They are fantastic! If I had based my “to pick this book up or not” decision on simply reading the back of the book, I would have immediately put it back down. But I didn’t even read the synopsis of them, I just started reading.

The story is very involved. There are a lot of characters and to try and keep track of them all is quite challenging. Each Lord has his banner, his banner colors and symbols. They each have their minions and followers. I find that just learning the key players, and not getting too caught up the side characters makes the story a lot easier to follow. I can only imagine what Mr Martin’s walls look like at home: they must be covered ceiling to floor with story boards of characters and who each belongs to. ;)

So far, they are fantastic. I can only hope that they keep going as they have begun. It’s a meaty series. Not always simple brainless fluff, so it should keep my occupied for a while lol.

Cheers!
