Sit Here Please

This caused a bit of debate with my mom.
When I told her that we were going to do assigned seating, she frowned...pondered and then just flat out said “say what!” She couldn’t believe that we were going to tell people where they had to sit.

I explained to her that this is times a’changin and it’s just the way that weddings are kinda going. We decided not to tell each guest what chair they were sitting in (so no place cards) but we were going to put certain guests at such and such table.  This was for few reasons. It takes away the whole stress of finding a place to sit, who to sit with, the “what if I get picked last for soccer” fear, what if no one wants to sit with me, and you can mix and match the guests a bit so they can meet and mingle.

Explanation to my mom, DONE!

So to do said “assigned seating” mission, I had to accomplish two parts.

First when the guests came into the hall, how were they to know what table they were sitting at? I had decided that I wanted to make a folding screen that had all the tables and numbers on it. Kind of like a room divider screen only three feet tall instead of six.

I had found some large cardboard boxes at work that I manhandled home and I proceeded to cut these down to the size I had in mind.
Then came the "covering" aspect of said cardboard. I tried wrapping the fabric around the panel, but the damn fabric was so silky that it kept sliding and slipping. And I only had two hands at the time (!) so I was finding it damn near impossible to try and get it to stay in place while I folded the corners and seams...time for another major wine break to think that one over!

So I  sat and pondered...

...for a long time.

...had a glass of wine.

...pondered and stared at the cardboard and fabric some more...

How the hell was I going to cover these three panels?

I needed a serious consultation!

So off I went. How do I do this mom?

Mom: I have no idea.
Frown...wrong answer!

Sister: What about making a pillow case!

AH!!! It was like I had seen the light!

Mom fired up the sewing machine...wizz wizz wizz! Panel number one done!

Slide in said piece of cardboard like a rubber on a ...well you get point.

One down, two to go!

We knocked them out in no time and then it was off to Home Depot to try and find some small hinges to attach the three panels together. Since it was carboard, I couldn’t use the screws, but in my brad goody-box I had silver brads THAT LOOK JUST LIKE A SCREW! A little glue gunning and voila! Three panels, covered in silky chocolate fabric, CONNECTED!
Mission accomplished!

Of course, it wasn’t until the night before the wedding (with all the late RSVP’s) that I actually got the seating pages done. Glued those suckers on and blinged it out a bit:
So moving on.

Mission number two: Table Numbers
Keeping with the “elegant yet homemade” “classy yet simple” idea, I went off to The Greatest Store On Earth, Dollarramma and bought up 16 silver 4x6 picture frames.

I fired up the ole PC and made my template. The design that I chose I used on both the screen paper and the table numbers, to tie them together.
I think that they turned out quite snazzy!

Cheers!
