Day Four: Don’t Toss Yer Roots

Day Four of Pinterest Shares!

Onions (in a pint glass).

I was a non-believer…now I believe.

I don’t buy green onions often. Mostly because I buy them for a specific recipe and then the leftovers die a sad wizzly death in the vegetable crisper.

I made Jamaican Jerk Chicken about three weeks ago and needed green onions for it. Remembering this pin, I thought that I would give it a shot and so I made sure that I saved my ends from the onions.

I left about 3 inches of the whites, with the roots intact.

Next, I did a quick scan around the kitchen…what to put the lil buggers in to see if this pin would work?

My eyes fell on The Pint Glass. I threw my little onions in, splashed in some water and then waited.

I was very surprised (and so was Weebo) to see the onions shoot again. I’d say that within four days I was already able to harvest them again.

I’m interested to see how many times I can harvest off of the same root system I have already cut them twice now. I’ll be sure to update this post in a bit to let you know how long they have lasted.

Cheers!

*Tip: change the water every two or so days. If you let it go too long, the roots get slimy and the onion doesn't grow as well.

* Update: The biggest flaw I can say about this Pin is the slight "onion-y" aroma that you get each time you walk by them lol. I don't mind overmuch but Weebo isn't a huge fan of onions.

The batch that's in the picture lasted about three weeks. I finally had to toss them because I wasn't watching the water level good enough. I have five new ones in my kitchen now and they are doing wonderfully!
